Win College Merit Scholarship Money
College merit scholarships could possibly make up a good portion of a student’s strategy for paying for college. Many millions of Americans unfortunately rely too much on student loans, and many of these people who have let their student loans go into default now find themselves with overwhelming amounts of student loan debt due to huge penalties imposed because of late fees and collection fees. Collection fees alone can add tens of thousands of dollars to your student loan debt burden.
To win college merit scholarship money is not as intimidating as it might sound, but this is an acquired skill and one must understand how to approach the subject. The best way to do this is to purchase the book, “How To Go To College Almost For Free” by Ben Kaplan. Kaplan won enough scholarship money to finance his four years at Harvard.
Starting this effort early is one piece of good advice. Getting serious about college scholarships in the first or second year of high school is the right approach. Doing so will allow you to figure out the clubs and extracurricular activities that will make your scholarship applications stand out above others. Community service efforts, for example, often count a lot in scholarship competitions. Another piece of advice is to start your scholarship effort by applying for smaller local scholarships, like those sponsored by service clubs or those offered by certain employers to children of employees, for example. In general these scholarships have less competition and are easier to win, and the experience you gain will help with other more competitive applications as time goes on.
One last consideration is to tell personal stories and anecdotes in your scholarship essays as much as possible. A personal story that underscores your interests or your accomplishments will most likely be better remembered by judges who are looking through hundreds of applications. Your goal should be to make the judges feel like they already know you personally before you have even met. These tips will help anyone who is serious and has the desire to win college merit scholarship money. And remember, try to keep the amount of student loans you have as low as possible. Also, avoid private student loans if you possibly can.
